What to Expect Your First Time Getting Waxed
First-time waxing clients usually have the same concerns: how much will it hurt, how should I prepare, and what happens after. Here's what to know before you come in.
Most first-time waxing clients arrive with some version of the same anxiety: they’ve heard stories, they’ve watched videos, and they’re not entirely sure what they’ve signed up for. The reality is almost always less dramatic than the anticipation — especially when you know what to expect and how to prepare.
Before Your Appointment
Let the hair grow. This is the step most people skip, and it’s the most important one. Wax adheres to hair, not skin — and if the hair is too short, it can’t grip effectively. Aim for about a quarter inch of growth, roughly the length of a grain of rice. For most people, that means two to four weeks after shaving.
Exfoliate gently 24 hours before. A light exfoliation the day before helps remove dead skin cells that can trap hairs and make removal less clean. Don’t exfoliate the day of your appointment — the skin needs to be calm.
Avoid certain products before your appointment. Retinol, strong acids, and other active skincare ingredients can make the skin more sensitive and prone to lifting during waxing. Stop using them two to three days before your appointment and mention any products you use regularly when you arrive.
Consider timing. Skin is more sensitive in the days before and during your menstrual cycle. If you’re scheduling a bikini or Brazilian wax, scheduling around your cycle can make the experience more comfortable.
During the Appointment
Your esthetician will cleanse the area before applying wax, then apply it in the direction of hair growth and remove it quickly against the direction of growth. The sensation is brief and sharp — most people describe it as a fast sting followed by warmth.
Areas with finer hair (arms, face) are generally much less intense than areas with coarser hair (bikini line, underarms). The anticipation tends to be worse than the reality, particularly for facial waxing.
If you need a moment at any point, say so. Your esthetician is there to make the experience as comfortable as possible.
After Your Appointment
Redness and sensitivity are normal. The skin will be pink immediately after and may stay mildly sensitive for a few hours. This fades.
Avoid heat for 24 hours. Hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, and sun exposure can irritate freshly waxed skin. Stick to lukewarm water and stay out of direct sunlight on the day of your appointment.
Skip tight clothing. Friction against freshly waxed skin — particularly in the bikini area — can cause irritation. Loose, breathable clothing for the rest of the day is worth planning for.
Exfoliate regularly once healed. Starting two to three days after your appointment, gentle exfoliation two to three times per week helps prevent ingrown hairs by keeping the skin surface clear as the hair regrows.
It Gets Easier
This is consistently true: the first wax is the most intense, and subsequent appointments become progressively more comfortable. Hair regrows finer and softer after repeated waxing — both because the hair becomes conditioned to the removal process and because some follicles are gradually weakened over time.
Most clients who are uncertain before their first appointment become regulars. If you have specific questions before you come in, we’re glad to talk through them.
