What to Expect at Your First Facial
If you've never had a professional facial, it's natural to wonder what actually happens. Here's a straightforward guide to what a first visit looks like — and why it's worth it.
A lot of people put off booking their first facial because they’re not sure what to expect. Will it be uncomfortable? Do they need to know their skin type? Is there something they’re supposed to do beforehand? The short answer to all of these: no preparation required, and the experience is almost always more relaxing than people anticipate.
What Happens During a Facial
A standard facial follows a consistent structure, even though the specific products and techniques vary based on your skin.
Consultation. Your esthetician will ask about your skin concerns, sensitivities, and what you’re hoping to address. This is where they start building a picture of what your skin actually needs — not what’s trending, but what’s appropriate for you specifically.
Cleansing. The session begins with a thorough cleanse to remove any product, oil, or environmental residue. This step alone often feels more complete than your at-home routine.
Exfoliation. Depending on your skin type, this might be a gentle enzyme treatment, a light chemical exfoliant, or a manual exfoliation. The goal is to clear away dead skin cells so that what follows can penetrate more effectively.
Extractions (if needed). Not every facial includes extractions, and your esthetician will only perform them if your skin would benefit. When done professionally, this step is far more comfortable than most people expect.
Treatment mask and massage. This is typically the most relaxing part. A mask suited to your skin type is applied while you rest, often paired with a scalp or hand massage.
Serums and moisturizer. The session closes with targeted serums and hydration — your skin at its most receptive to absorb what it needs.
A Few Things to Know
Come without makeup if you can, though it’s not required — cleansing is the first step regardless. Avoid sun exposure and active exfoliants at home for a day or two after your appointment, as your skin will be freshly treated and more sensitive.
Your skin may look slightly flushed immediately after, particularly if extractions were performed. This resolves quickly. Within a day or two, most clients notice their skin looks clearer, feels softer, and holds moisture better.
If you’re not sure which facial is right for you, just mention your main concerns when you book and we’ll guide you from there.
