What Is Red Light Therapy for Skin?

Red light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate collagen production, reduce inflammation, and improve skin texture — without heat, UV exposure, or downtime.

Red light therapy has moved from clinical settings into mainstream skincare over the past decade, and for good reason. The research behind it is more substantial than most cosmetic treatments — and the mechanism is better understood than it might initially seem.

How It Works

Red light therapy uses low-level wavelengths of red light — typically in the 630 to 700 nanometer range — that penetrate the skin’s surface and reach the deeper layers where cells do their repair work. Unlike UV light, which damages DNA and causes the breakdown that leads to premature aging, red light stimulates cellular activity without causing harm.

The primary mechanism involves the mitochondria. Red light wavelengths are absorbed by photoreceptors in the cell’s mitochondria — the structures responsible for producing cellular energy. This absorption increases the cell’s production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), effectively giving cells more energy to perform their normal repair and regeneration functions.

The results are real and measurable:

Collagen stimulation. Fibroblasts — the cells responsible for producing collagen — are activated by red light exposure. Increased collagen production leads to improved skin firmness, reduced fine lines, and better overall skin structure over time.

Reduced inflammation. Red light has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects, making it useful for redness-prone skin, rosacea, and post-procedure recovery.

Improved texture and tone. With consistent use, skin surface irregularities tend to smooth, and overall luminosity improves.

Accelerated healing. Following extractions, peels, or other treatments that create mild skin stress, red light can support faster recovery.

What a Session Involves

As an add-on to a facial, red light therapy is administered for 10 minutes using a professional-grade panel or device positioned close to the skin’s surface. Your eyes will be covered. The experience is gentle — most people describe it as warm and calming, similar to sitting in a patch of sunlight.

There is no downtime. The skin is not compromised in any way by red light treatment, so you can return to your normal routine immediately.

Who It’s Right For

Red light therapy suits nearly every skin type and concern. It’s particularly valuable for clients focused on anti-aging, those dealing with chronic redness or rosacea, anyone recovering from acne or breakouts, and clients who want to extend the results of their facial beyond the treatment room.

The benefits are cumulative — a single session produces a mild improvement, but regular treatment over time is where the meaningful change in skin quality becomes visible.

We offer red light therapy as a 10-minute add-on to any facial service. If you’re curious whether it makes sense as part of your treatment, we’re glad to help you decide.
