What Is a Vichy Shower?
A Vichy shower is a hydrotherapy treatment unlike anything else in a spa menu. If you've never experienced one, here's exactly what to expect.
A Vichy shower is one of those treatments that’s easier to experience than to explain — but once you’ve had one, the appeal is immediately clear.
Named after Vichy, France, a town long celebrated for its thermal waters and healing spa culture, a Vichy shower brings the essence of that tradition into a treatment room setting.
How It Works
Unlike a standard shower, a Vichy shower uses a horizontal overhead bar fitted with multiple water jets — typically five to seven — positioned along its length. You lie on a waterproof wet table beneath the bar while warm water flows down across your body in a consistent, enveloping stream.
The result is something like being immersed in warm rain while remaining still. The water temperature is carefully controlled, and the pressure is gentle rather than forceful. The sensation is deeply relaxing — more so, many clients find, than a standard massage alone.
How It’s Used
The Vichy shower is rarely a standalone treatment. It’s most commonly paired with a body scrub, salt glow, or mud wrap, where it serves a specific purpose: rinsing away exfoliating products while simultaneously stimulating circulation and soothing the skin.
The combination is particularly effective. After a body scrub, the skin is freshly exfoliated and more receptive. The warm water then enhances circulation, softens remaining product, and leaves the skin clean, warm, and visibly luminous. The transition from exfoliation to the shower feels seamless and complete.
What to Expect During Your Session
You’ll be on a fully supported wet table throughout the treatment. Your therapist will guide the experience — adjusting temperature, positioning, and timing — while you remain comfortably draped. There’s nothing you need to do except relax.
The warmth tends to have a sedative effect on the nervous system. Many clients describe feeling deeply still afterward, in a way that’s different from other treatments.
Who It’s For
Almost anyone can enjoy a Vichy shower. It’s particularly well-suited to those who find deep pressure massage too intense but want a deeply physical spa experience. It’s also an excellent choice if you’re looking for something that addresses the skin as well as the nervous system in a single session.
If you have questions about how a Vichy shower fits into a longer spa day or which body treatment to pair it with, we’re happy to help you put together something that makes sense for what you’re looking for.
