What Is a Mud Wrap?
A mud wrap is one of the oldest body treatments in spa culture — and one of the most effective. Here's what happens during a session, and why the combination with a Vichy shower makes it particularly worthwhile.
Mud as a therapeutic tool predates modern skincare by millennia. Thermal mineral springs, volcanic clay, and mineral-rich earth have been applied to the body for their healing properties across nearly every culture in recorded history. A mud wrap is the contemporary spa version of that tradition — refined, comfortable, and genuinely effective.
What Happens During a Session
Your therapist applies warm therapeutic mud to your body in an even layer — typically covering the back, shoulders, legs, and arms. Once applied, you’re wrapped in warm blankets or sheets that retain the heat and allow the mud to work against the skin.
You rest in this cocoon for 20 to 30 minutes. The warmth deepens throughout the treatment as the wrapping traps body heat, creating a mild sweating response that helps the skin release toxins and absorb the minerals in the mud.
The wrap is then removed — typically in a Vichy shower, where warm water rinses the mud while the overhead jets continue the circulation benefits.
What Thermal Mud Does
The mud used in therapeutic body wraps is not ordinary clay. Thermal mud is harvested from geothermal areas and is rich in minerals — sulfur, iron, magnesium, and silica among them — that have been shown to absorb into the skin’s surface layer and produce measurable effects.
Mineral absorption. The skin is more permeable than most people realize, particularly under heat. Warm mud applied to open, warm skin allows trace minerals to absorb into the epidermis, where they support skin cell function and tone.
Detoxification. The mild heat-induced sweating, combined with the drawing properties of clay, helps clear the skin of surface impurities and stimulate lymphatic flow.
Muscle relief. The sustained warmth has a genuinely therapeutic effect on underlying muscle tissue. People with chronic soreness, joint stiffness, or general tension often find meaningful relief that lasts beyond the session.
Skin texture and hydration. Following a mud wrap, skin typically feels noticeably softer. The mineral content contributes to improved tone and texture over a series of treatments.
Paired with the Vichy Shower
The mud wrap is most effective when followed by a Vichy shower, which is exactly how we offer it. The warm overhead water rinses the treatment from every surface simultaneously while the circulation benefits of both treatments overlap — leaving skin clean, soft, and glowing in a way that a simple rinse can’t match.
This combination is featured in our Relax & Renew and Relax & Chill spa bundles, where it’s paired with a full massage to extend the muscle and relaxation benefits throughout the entire visit.
What to Expect
You’ll be professionally draped and comfortable throughout the treatment. The mud is warm rather than hot, and the wrapping is snug but not constrictive. Most people find the wrapped rest phase deeply relaxing — some fall asleep.
Wear or bring clothing you don’t mind getting slightly marked by residual mineral products, though our team takes care to minimize this.
If you have questions about which treatment or bundle makes the most sense for your goals, we’re happy to help you put something together.
